Recognising and Registering

Traditional Health Practitioners (THPs)

across South Africa and the |Xam:ka !ei Nation

What we do

01

Secure the fair, lawful recognition & rights of practitioners of indigenous knowledge systems (IKS) and traditional health in the cultivation, processing and/or trading of indigenous/traditional herbs, including cannabis.

Make representations, including court process if needed for the commercialization (to trade therewith and therein) of all indigenous/traditional herbs, including cannabis.

Recognise and register active IKS practitioners and traditional health practitioners (THPs).

Train and coordinate IKS practitioners, THPs and their legal representatives on indigenous/traditional herbs, including cannabis.

05

Appoint and instruct legal professionals for and on behalf of Soakwagixa members, making representations to the authorities and Government departments and representatives.

Interact and liaise with international organisations/bodies to further the aims of IKS and THPs.

In accordance with

The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities Act, 2002

To provide for the composition of the Commission for the Promotion and
Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities;
to provide for additional functions of the Commission;
to provide for the convening of a national consultative conference; to provide for the establishment and recognition of community councils;
to provide for matters connected therewith.

The Traditional Health Practitioners Act, 2007

To establish the Interim Traditional Health Practitioners Council of South Africa; to provide for a regulatory framework to ensure the efficacy, safety and quality of traditional health care services; to provide for the management and control over the registration, training and conduct of practitioners, students and specified categories in the traditional health practitioners profession; and to provide formatters connected therewith.

The Protection, Promotion, Development and Management of Indigenous Knowledge Act, 2019​

To provide for the protection, promotion, development and management of
indigenous knowledge; to provide for the establishment and functions of the
National Indigenous Knowledge Systems Office; to provide for the management of
rights of indigenous knowledge communities; to provide for the establishment and
functions of the Advisory Panel on indigenous knowledge; to provide for access and
conditions of access to knowledge of indigenous communities; to provide for the
recognition of prior learning; to provide for the facilitation and coordination of
indigenous knowledge-based innovation; and to provide for matters incidental
thereto.
